President declares War Heroes Month

The Ranaviru Commemoration Month has been declared. The declaration of the Ranaviru Commemoration month took place at temple Trees this morning under the patronage of President Rajapaksa. The declaration of the Ranaviru Commemoration month took place after the first Ranaviru flag was pinned on to the President. The Ranaviru Commemoration month will continue till the 02nd of June. The first Ranaviru flag was pinned on to the President by K.P. Senangha Nuwanthi, the daughter of Corporal K.P. Nuwan Tharanga of the Second Commando Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army who sacrificed his life on behalf of the country in a terrorist attack in Mannar in the year 2007. A memento was also presented to the President as a tribute for the yeoman services he is discharging on behalf of the relatives of the war heroes. The Defence Ministry and the Ranaviru Seva Authority have planned several commemorative programmes in view of the Ranaviru Commemorative month. The Provincial Governors handed over to the President the funds raised from the sale of Ranaviru flags last year. These funds were in turn handed over to the Ranaviru Seva Authority to be utilized for the welfare of the Ranaviru families. The President symbolically handed over the flags for this year that are to be sold within the Provinces. The awarding of scholarships for children of war heroes who have qualified for university education also took place on the occasion.
