President warmly welcomed in New Delhi

President Rajapaksa who left the island to participate in the swearing of the new Indian Prime Minister has received a very warm welcome in New Delhi.

The President left for New Delhi this morning from the Katunayake International Airport to join in the inauguration of India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi.


Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris and Arumugam Thondaman, Foreign Ministry Supervision MP Sajin Vass Gunawardena, Jaffna Mayor Yogeshwari Patgunarasa, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and Foreign Secretary Kshenuka Seneviratne joined the President in this visit.

On arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi in a SriLankan Airlines flight, the President and his entourage were warmly greeted by Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India Prasad Kariyawasam and India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Y.K. Sinha. Security was tightened at the Airport for the Sri Lankan President.

President Rajapaksa is due to participate in a banquet to be hosted by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rastrapathi Bawan after the swearing in ceremony. Also during his stay in India, the Sri Lankan President is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with the new Indian Prime Minister and several State Leaders.

The Indian media spoke high of the visit of the Sri Lankan President during live commentaries given by NDTV.
