Are the constant train accidents acts of sabotage? The Railways General Manager said that a comprehensive investigation is being held in this respect. Six employees have been interdicted following the latest train accident in Aluthgama.
Two trains collided at the Aluthgama Railway Station this morning. A fuel cargo train but without fuel and which was plying from Galle to Colombo collided with a passenger train which was halted at the Aluthgama Railway Station causing damage to the trains as well as the rail track. It is reported that the accident had occurred due to the release of erroneous signals. None has been injured by this incident. The driver and his assistant had been hospitalized due to shock.
Six employees have been interdicted following this chaos. They are the two station masters at Aluthgama, the driver and assistant of the cargo train as well as the head guard and his assistant. An internal inquiry is in progress and the employees will remain interdicted until the receipt of the inquiry report.
Attributing the direct involvement of discipline of workers to these accidents, General Manager Railways B.A.P. Ariyaratne said that the cause of accidents is mainly due to the negligence of certain employees. He said that a special inquiry is being held in this respect. Recently another train accident was reported at Pothuhera causing injuries to several persons. The damage runs into millions of rupees.
In the meantime time Deputy Minister Rohana Dissanayake who visited the scene of the accident made inquiries into the incident.
