Add comments

There are signs of the United National Party shattering from Moneragala too following a brawl between two factions of the party.

A walk organized by Uva Provincial Councillor Tissa Kuttiarachchi of the group of United National Party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe was proceeding from Bibile to Kataragama. Only 12 youths from the Youth Front were participating in this walk. Their intention was to carry a memorandum to Parliamentarians Ruwan Wijewardena and Haren Fernando.

On the same day the faction of United National Party Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara had organized a distribution of leaflets. Arrangements had also been to hold their first Bala Mandala meeting at the office of Bibile Organizer Nihal Chandrasiri. The walk of the 12 youths of the Youth Front was passing the office on this occasion when the faction of Ranjith Madduma Bandara had hooted at them. However, they proceeded with their walk. Those who were standing by had queried as to the need of a Party which cannot find at least 10 youths for a walk. The Police had secured a Court order to halt the distribution of leaflets to prevent a clash following the launch of two programmes by two factions of the UNP on the same day. It was on this occasion that an officer of the Bibile Police handed over to Ranjith Madduma Bandara a letter which says that the distribution of leaflets had been prohibited by a court order.

The UNP Co-organizer of Moneragala Sampath Jayasuriya has spoken criticizing the UNP leadership. Opposition Leader of the Badalkumbura Pradeshiya Sabha Bandu Yogananda as well as Parliamentarian Ranjith Mdduma Bandara had thereafter expressed views severely criticizing the leadership.
