The Customs have apprehended a woman who had illegally
brought 26 animals to the country. She was also arrested along with the animals.
Airport Customs Director Deepal Siribaddana said that the woman who had come from Thailand was arrested at around 12.30 last night. It was found that she had concealed these birds and animals in her luggage. She is a resident of Negombo. She had thus brought to the island two love birds, 10 doves, six rabbits, nine parrots and a garden lizard. Its value is estimated at around 132 thousand rupees. Deputy Customs Director S.N.G. Mohotti conducted the customs inquiry. The Customs Director said that a fine of 25 thousand rupees was imposed on the woman and that orders were given to hand over the birds and the animals to the Zoo.
