Leaders of Sri Lanka and Iran hold talks with the aim of further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. President Rajapaksa and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met in Shanghai, China in parallel to the Fourth Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia. President Rajapaksa emphasized that Sri Lanka’s desire is to further consolidate the existing relations between Iran and Sri Lanka. He also said that Sri Lanka’s intention was to explore the possibilities of strengthening trade ties and the exchange of goods and services. President Rajapaksa expressed his gratitude for the unstinted support given by Iran for various development projects which are being launched in Sri Lanka. President Rouhani said Iran is also interested in enhancing the bilateral relations and said Iran also wished to develop economic relations between the two countries. Recalling the meeting between the two leaders in New York City during last year’s U.N. General Assembly, President Rouhani said he was happy for the opportunity received to meet President Rajapaksa again. Present at this meeting were Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, Foreign Secretary Kshenuka Seneviratne, Presidential Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath and Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in China Ranjith Uyangoda.
