It is not a secret that the country was in total disarray during the period in which terrorism reigned.
We now refresh the memories about the noble members of the Security Forces who made supreme sacrifices in their endeavours to liberate the country from the terrorists and enthrone peace and also the many civilians who were killed after being caught up in the terror attacks.
It is recorded in the diary of the dark memories that the ruthless terrorists had taken away 62 lives on 23rd May throughout the fear psychosis period.
In the year 1995 on a day like today the tiger terrorists unleashed a heinous attack targeting the war heroes. As a result of this assault, 27 war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the motherland. Heavy fighting raged between the members of the Security Forces and the tiger terrorists in the Waraththuppalai area on 23rd May 1996. Two war heroes made supreme sacrifices in this battle.
A heavy shell attack was unleashed by the terrorists on the war heroes on 23rd May 1998. Two more war heroes were killed in this attack. Chenaikudiyiruppu was the next target of the ruthless terrorists. Heavy fighting rages between the war heroes and the terrorists in this area in the year 1998 also on a day like today. As a result two war heroes were killed.
The tiger terrorists lurking in the Thambalagamuwa area mooted a heinous attack on the war heroes on 23rd May 2001. 14 war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the unity of the motherland.
The terrorists took away the lives of two civilians and 60 war heroes on the 23rd of May during the terror period. Accordingly the number killed by the terrorists during this era was 62.
The members of the Security Forces who advanced in the humanitarian operation due to the unwavering leadership of President Rajapaksa, who is also the Commander in Chief and the appropriate guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, killed the murderous tiger leader at the Nanthikadal Lagoon in Wellamulliwaikkal and ended the fear psychosis era. If not the country would have become a land of the dead.
Peace has now dawned in the country and the entire nation is enjoying the dividends of peace for the past five years.
The present Government headed by the people’s leader has paved the way to make it enduring peace. But it is sad to note that certain local as well as foreign forces are determined to destroy this peace. They are making false and unfounded allegations on these war heroes.
It is the courage and bravery displayed by the war heroes who made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country that are being reminisced in this feature. It cannot be deleted by anyone. Whatever was said by anyone, the war heroes who protected the country are immortal. It should be emphasized that the memories of these war heroes of the era who gave up their lives on behalf of genuine freedom, will continue to be refreshed in this feature also from tomorrow.
