The Commemoration month is taking place at a time when five years had passed since the liberation of the motherland from the terrorists. Sri Lankans not in only the motherland but also in other countries are holding ceremonies commemorating these heroic soldiers.
A Ranaviru commemoration was organized opposite the War Heroes Monument at Puthukudiyiruppu in Mullaivitua where the final battled was wages. It was held under the patronage of Northern Governor G.A. Chandrasiri. A two minutes silence was observed to commemorate the war heroes. Thereafter the paying of floral tributes to the monument commenced. Many senior military officials including Mullaitivu Commander in Chief Major General Jagath Dias joined in this commemoration ceremony.
The Central Province commemoration was held under the auspices of Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa and Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake at the Mailapitiya Ranaviru Commemoration Park in Kandy. Family members of war heroes joined in this occasion.
The North Central Province Ranaviru Commemoration ceremony was organized near the Ranaviru Monument in Anuradhapura. Governor Karunaratne Divulgane and Chief Minister S.M. Ranjith patronized in the event. After a military Guard of Honour, the guests offered floral tributes to the Ranaviru Monument. Family members of the war heroes who sacrificed their lives on behalf of the country also paid floral tributes. Deputy Minsters W.B. Ekanayake and H. C. Muthukumara, Parliamentarian Shehan Semasinghe and many people’s representatives were present.
Sri Lankans living in France also organized a ceremony to commemorate the war heroes under the guidance of the members of the Maha Sangha. All Sri Lankans present on the occasion lit a lamp and offered a flower each and paid their tribute to the fallen war heroes. The ceremony was held under the theme “Commemorate the valiant soldiers who dedicated their lives to enthrone freedom for the posterity by shedding their blood on behalf of the motherland.” Members of the Maha Sangha including the Ven. Paravahera Chandraratana Thera and a group including Sri Lanka’s Deputy Ambassador to France Swarna Perera joined in this commemoration ceremony.
