This river can also be considered the leading contributor of the professions of the people living adjacent to the river. Inland fisheries, power generation, agriculture, the sand clay and pot industries and transport are among the many activities that are taking place with the River being used as the base.
The Kelani River which is being used for such vivid activities and which also has a high aesthetic value, has also been identified as the most polluted river in Sri Lanka.

The contribution of a number of establishments including the Central Environment Authority is being sought for this programme. The introduction of this programme took place at the Kelani Raja Maha Vihara recently. It was organised under the patronage of Minister Susil Premajayantha.
The Minister said that the water of the river was being polluted by human activities on either side of the river and it has a serious impact on the population within the City of Colombo and the suburbs as well as on the people living on either side of the river. He said that they planned to protect the river banks and its cleanliness by educating the public and soliciting their contribution.
