An injunction has been issued against the holding of the annual elections
of the Government Medical Officers Association.
Two members of the Association had filed a petition in the Colombo District Court claiming that the GMOA Elections Committee is corrupt. The petition said that the Committee had permitted a non-member to contest the elections. As such the petitioners said that they cannot expect a fair poll.
Addressing a news conference to brief the media on the Court injunction Dr. Niroshan Premaratne said that the Colombo District Court issued an injunction order against the election of office bearers of the Government Medical Officers’ Association. Permanent members of the Union usually contest for designations within the Union. There are two Vice President Posts. Four candidates have submitted nominations. But one person who is a specialist has lost his membership as he had secured membership of another Union while remaining within the GMOA. He said that the Committee was informed on several occasion that it is incorrect to accept nominations of this particular candidate to contest the elections. But the Committee did not give an ear to their request. As such Dr. Premaratne said that they had no other alternative but to seek the assistance of the judiciary.
