The country was in a state of anarchy when the dark shadows of terrorism was over the island.
The people will never forget that period of terror. No one can imagine the fate of the country, if the heroic soldiers did not eradicate ruthless terrorism from the motherland. Two civilians were killed on 8th June 1982 when LTTE terrorists exploded a bomb in Jaffna. Four soldiers lost their lives during a terrorist attack at Wadamarachchi on 8th June 1991. Terrorists ambushed soldiers at Mullaitivu on 8th June 1992 and three soldiers lost their lives. 67 heroic soldiers sacrificed their lives to the freedom of the motherland when LTTE terrorists launched a massive attack at Kilinochchi on 8th June 1998. On the same day four soldiers lost their lives when LTTE terrorists attacked them on Mankulum. The country lost three soldiers when the terrorists attacked a platoon of soldiers who were guarding Ulukkulum village in Vavuniya. On 8th June 2006 an LTTE claymore mine exploded killing two innocent civilians at Sanganei. 10 heroic soldiers lost their lives when LTTE terrorists attacked them at Kiri-Ibbanwewa in Welioya on 8th June 2008. The ruthless terrorism which caused massive destruction to lives and property was eradicated from the motherland on 18th May 2009. By that day 111 people including 107 heroic soldiers and 4 innocent civilians had been killed by LTTE terrorists. The soldiers marched forward under the brave leadership of the Commander in Chief and President Mahinda Rajapaksa and on the directions of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. The splendid victory was achieved by eradicating terrorism at Nandikadal lagoon amidst numerous obstacles and sacrifices. Certain local and foreign elements are attempting to destroy the freedom won by the heroic soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the motherland. The people in the country are well aware about the plans of the conspirators. Therefore the people will never allow to create another dark era in the country. The patriotic people have shown this again and again by strengthening the government and the leader of the state. We show the photographs of the heroic soldiers to the whole world as a mark of respect for them and as an honor to their relatives and friends. The heroic soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the motherland are an honor to the country.
