A special dengue prevention programme is to be mooted.

Houses will be examined while measures will also be taken to educate the public. President Rajapaksa has emphasized the need to implement a practical program which would bring positive results rather than being limited only to words.

This special program will be implemented on a decision reached at the Presidential Task Force on Dengue Prevention meeting, headed by the President held at Temple Trees. It was agreed at this discussion to launch this special programme with the support of public servants, Security Forces, Police personnel and Local Government bodies.

The President pointed that such an immediate programme which would yield solutions to the crackdown on dengue was vital. He also pointed out that when a long period of time is spent on research, it is the innocent people who have to suffer the most.

President Rajapaksa said Municipal Councils and Provincial Councils should take cognizance of the Dengue issue by maintaining a clean environment in their respective areas. The need of creating public awareness on Dengue was highlighted as the monsoon season creates a conducive breeding environment for the dengue mosquito. It was also highlighted at the meeting that 50 percent of the Dengue spreading mosquitoes breed in leftover tins, cans and other utensils, while 22 percent of dengue mosquitoes breed in water storing utensils.

The President instructed the Local Government representatives to implement a mechanism to conduct regular inspections on gutters as they create a healthy environment for Dengue mosquito breeding. It was also revealed at the meeting that the Dengue risk is high in the Agalawatta area due to the use of coconut shells for rubber tapping. It was also noted that Dengue preventive measures should be taken in one’s own home garden. Ministers Maithripala Sirisena, Basil Rajapaksa and Mahinda Amaraweera, Deputy Minister Dulip Wijesekara, Chief Ministers, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge, Ministry Secretaries and Defence officials were present at this meeting.
