Many low-lying areas are flooded following the extreme weather conditions experienced in many areas including the Central Hills. Spill Gates of several Reservoirs have been opened.
Heavy rains lashed the Central Hills throughout yesterday with the Southwest Monsoon becoming active. As a result many low lying areas have gone under water. The Disaster Management Centre said that there is a landslide threat due to the fall of earth mounds. There were obstructions to the movement of traffic along the Hatton-Colombo main road due to the slip of an earth mound at Diyalagoda in Ginigathena. However, the road has been cleared and our correspondents reported that traffic movement has return to normality.
Heavy rain has been experienced in several areas including Ratnapura resulting in obstructions to the movement of traffic. Transport was paralyzed along the Rakwana Deniyaya Road due to the sudden collapse of a Bridge. Many low lying areas within the Elapatha, Ratnapura and Ayagama Divisional Secretariat Division are threatened with floods as the water level of Kaluganga was rising rapidly.
Several low lying areas within the Nivithigala Divisional Secretariat Division in Ragtnapura are also inundated. The water level of the Hangamu River, a branch of Kaluganga is also reported to be rising and residents of low lying areas have been urged to be cautious.
The Irrigation Department said that sluice gates of several Reservoirs including Upper Kotmale have been opened with the heavy rain being experienced. Four spill gates of the Upper Kotmale Reservoir have already been opened. Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri said that sluice gates of the Lakshapana, Norton Bridge and Castlereigh Reservoirs have also been opened.
