The Presidential Commission on Missing Persons says witnesses giving evidence to the Commission are assured protection. This assurance has been given by Secretary to the Commission H.W. Gunadasa.
The Missing Persons Commission has concluded its fourth round of public sittings in Batticaloa today. The Presidential Commission on Missing Persons held public sittings at several places in the Batticaloa District within the Eastern Province throughout the last few days. It recorded evidence from the people of main disappearances that had occurred during the conflict period.
Chairman of the Presidential Commission Maxwell Paraganama said that a majority of the complaints of over 18 thousand that it had received from the Eastern Province were against the LTTE. Not a single complaint had so far been lodged against the Security Forces. Letters were despatched to 145 persons to record evidence with respect to the complaints received from the Batticaloa area. Evidence was recorded from 83 persons during the weekend. The recording of evidence from the others ended today.
In the meantime, the tiger terrorists who stormed into the Kattankudy Mosque in the year 1990 killed 140 innocent Muslim civilians and the Commission had recorded evidence with regard to this attack.
