Poson Week begins – 15 schools in Anuradhapura closed till 15th

The Poson Week has commenced. Many facilities are being accorded to devotees visiting Anuradhapura. 15 schools in Anuradhapura have been closed from today until the 15th in view of Poson Week.


Devotees are geared to commemorate the visit of Arahant Mahinda to Sri Lanka giving pride of place to religious observances. This year’s Poson celebration theme is ‘Let’s practice gratitude – commemorate Arahath Mahinda.’ The Government Agent office in Anuradhapura said special arrangements are being made to provide drinking water, electricity, transportation and sanitation facilities for about two million devotees expected in the sacred areas during the Poson festive period.

The Poson Week is operative centering Anuradhapura, Mihintale and Thanthirimale.

Fifteen schools in the area being used to provide lodging to the Police Officers who are arriving in Anurahapura for the Poson Festival in addition to meeting their welfare facilities.

The beautification programme of the Mihintale Sacred Area is in place on the instructions of the President. The cleaning of the Sacred Area was held throughout yesterday with the contribution of the Private Sector. The Anuradhapura Poson Committee said this work was also being carried out today.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Railways and the Sri Lanka Transport Board have unveiled a special programme to meet the transport needs of the devotees arriving in Anuradhapura for Poson. Trains between Anuradhapura an d Mihintale will operate free of charge Passengers are being advised to refrain from travelling on foot board on trains plying on the Northern track as there are some narrow bridges.

The Sri Lanka Railways has also warned commuters to avoid peeping out of windows and to undertake their travel in a very secure manner.
