EC to secure report on polling booths

Add comments

The Elections Secretariat (EC) is planning to secure a report with respect to all polling booths within the country. Additional Elections Commissioner M.M. Mohamed said that the aim of this exercise is to inquire into the location of the polling booths as differently-abled persons encounter various difficulties in exercising their votes.

Mr. Mohamed said that Elections Commissioner has given instructions to Deputy Elections Commissioners and Additional Elections Commissioners to carry out a survey of polling booths used by differently abled persons. A final decision has to be reached on the polling booths, as there are plans to hold three national level elections in the future.

It had been clarified that in earlier elections polling booths which were difficult for the Elderly voters and especially differently abled voters to approach had to experience grave hardships. As such he said that the Elections Chief has given instructions to find out possible locations which can be used as polling booths that could be easily approached by senior citizens as well as differently abled persons.

He also said that the Elections Chief expects to allocate a separate place within the premises of the polling centre for such voters in cases in which alternative booths cannot be found.
