The Chairman of the Presidential Commission on Missing Persons has said that most of the complaints on disappearance of persons in the East have been received against the LTTE. Not a single complaint has been lodged against the Security Forces.

The Presidential Commission inquiring into Missing Persons is now meeting in Batticaloa in the Eastern Province to inquire into complaints on disappeared persons. Many complaints lodged by the people were taken up for hearing at the Kattankudi Divisional Secretariat. The Commission is probing complaints made on persons who had gone missing after 1990.

Chairman of the Commission retired Judge Maxwell Paranagama said that a majority of the complaints had been lodged against the LTTE outfit. According to the Chairman, most of the complainants had said that their relatives disappeared while they were visiting Kalmunai or Kattankudy on business matters. The Presidential Commission hearings in Batticaloa will continue until Monday. Thereafter the Commission will move on to Mullaitivu.

The number of complaints so far received by the Commission has reached around 18 thousand. More than 13 thousand complaints had been made on missing civilians. The Commission reported that around 5000 more had been lodged against missing Security Forces personnel.

The Commission appointed by the President on 14 August 2013, is mandated to inquire into and report on alleged abductions or disappearances during the period June 10, 1990, to May 19, 2009.
