Marzuki Darusman’s dream of becoming the UN Human Rights Commissioner after Navi Pillay has shattered. The next Human Rights Commissioner will be Prince Zeid al Hussein of the Middle East.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced the new appointment yesterday. Although the much talked character, the incumbent UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay’s term of office was due to end in 2012, it was extended for another two years. Accordingly she is due to retire in August this year.

International media in the past few days reported that Marzuki Darusman who crafted the United Nations dossier against Sri Lanka was expected to be appointed as the UN Human Rights Commissioner and that he was most likely to assume that position. But shattering his hopes UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced yesterday that Prince Zeid al Hussein of Jordan will take over as the next UN Human Rights Chief.

Prince Zeid al Hussein is a long-time diplomat and former U.N. peacekeeper. Prince Zeid has built a reputation as being strong on issues such as international justice and sexual violence. International attention is drawn as to how his future decisions would be in the face of the world’s political trends.
