The proposal to decide whether permission should be granted for the Inquiry Committee of Navaneethen Pillay against Sri Lanka will be taken up in Parliament tomorrow.
The Special Committee comprising representatives nominated by United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Navaneethen Pillay, making baseless and unfounded war crimes allegations against Sri Lanka
is slated to begin inquiries within the next few days. In the meantime a group of Parliamentarians has signed a proposal and handed over to the Speaker saying that permission should not be granted for the conduct of such a probe. Parliamentarians Achala Jagodage, Malini Fonseka, Janaka Bandara, Udith Lokubandara, A.H.M. Azwer, Shantha Bandara, J.R.P. Suriyapperuma, Nimal Wijesinghe and Duminda Silva had inked this proposal.
Accordingly the Party Leaders who met recently agreed to hold a debate on the proposal tomorrow and the day after. The main proposal is that the investigation against Sri Lanka OUNHC should not be held and that Parliament resolves that such a course of action is detrimental to the process of reconciliation and peace and that it erodes the sovereignty, dignity and stature of Sri Lanka.
The vote on the Resolution will be held day after tomorrow. However he UNP and some of its MPs are opposed for the conduct of such a Parliamentary debate.
UNP Deputy President and Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella expressing views to the weekend newspaper had said that the conduct of such a debate was a wastage of funds and time. Lakshman Kiriella is an MP who made a statement during the decisive state of the humanitarian operations that any bull could wage a war.
In the meantime, United National Party Colombo District Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake also expressing views to an English weekend newspaper had pointed out that it is unavoidable to prevent through Parliament, efforts made by the Committee to hold an inquiry against the Government and its chief. Mr. Karunanayake was also an MP who belittled the war heroes during the decisive stage of the humanitarian operations.
In the meantime, the United National Party too recently issuing a statement had mentioned that attempts made by the Pillay Committee to arrive in Sri Lanka for an inquiry cannot be prevented.
The government has underscored that whatever statements were made by opportunistic groups, as a Government all measures will be taken on behalf of the sovereignty of the motherland and that it will leave no room to betray the war heroes to the world.
