The Government has emphasized that it is the responsibility of the media to refrain from publishing announcements and baseless reports which would be deleterious to unity among various religious groups in the country.
The Government today urged all media organizations to act with responsibility in reporting incidents that could harm religious coexistence in the country.
The Government said spreading of rumors and issuing statements, releases with regard to yesterday’s Alutgama incident are against media culture and ethics. Also the Government noted that minor incidents could be highlighted as major incidents using technology, as had been done in the case of Alutgama incident. Therefore the government has requested the people to remain calm and refrain from espousing communal hatred that would harm country’s religious coexistence and that action would be taken against those who spread rumors and incorrect information.
