A special dengue crackdown programme within the Western Province will commence tomorrow. Special programmes will be in place on the 21 and 22. It was revealed at a news conference in Colombo that this special dengue crackdown will be implemented by the Presidential Task Force in collaboration with the Armed Forces, the Health and Environment Ministries and many state establishments. Director of the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry Dr. Paba Palihawadana said that an epidemic status has reached within the Western Province with the onset of rain, in comparison to last year. As such she said they were launching a special driver for three days beginning tomorrow. She said she solicited the support of the public for this dengue crackdown programme. Director of the National Dengue Control Unit Dr. Hashitha Tissera pointed out that about 1000 officials have been trained to handle the dengue control programme. It is important to destroy any mosquito breeding grounds during these three days because if such places are detected when these officials make visits, there would be a problem. He said that they expect a better situation to prevail when these officials undertake visits.
