A Buddhist Advisory Council to provide advice to the Government on matters related to Buddhism has been established. The launch of the Advisory Council took place with the participation of the President. Action was initiated to launch the Buddhist Advisory Council taking into consideration views presented by the Mahanayake Theras of all Nikayas. The establishment of the Advisory Council took place with the participation of President Rajapaksa at Temple Trees. The Advisory Council comprises a group of representatives including Anunayake Thera nominated by the Mahanayake Theras. Expressing views on the occasion, the President emphasized that there was a dire need of a Buddhist Advisory Council. Pointing out that the Government could seek advice from this Advisory Council during issues surfacing with respect to Buddhism and in the protection of Buddhist culture, the President said that the Government expected to make its path more accurate through such efforts. Anunayake of the Malwatte Chapter, the Ven. Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera giving his views on the occasion said the initiative taken by the President to establish such an Advisory Council was laudable. He emphasized that the Maha Sangha appreciated the genuine leadership provided by the President to the country. The Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera described the action adopted to establish the Buddhist Advisory Council as more appropriate step taken. He pointed out that it was significant in building inter religious harmony within the country. A group including members of the Maha Sangha representing all Nikayas and Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, joined in the occasion.
