Sri Lankans can very well remember the carnage unleashed by the LTTE terrorists within the country.
No one can estimate the damage they unleashed during this period.
The country would have still been plagued by terrorism, if the LTTE which was a mortal threat had not been totally uprooted by the heroic soldiers.
The tiger terrorists launched a heinous assault on the war heroes on 20th June 1990 within the Palaly area. But the heroic soldiers succeeded in reining in the attacks within a few hours. However, the country lost the valuable services of four war heroes. Another skirmish was reported at a different location in Palaly on the same. Three war heroes were killed in this incident.
The ruthless terrorists barged into the Sinhapura area in Helambagaswewa village on 20th June 1991 and grabbed the lives of 19 war heroes. More were injured in the attack mooted by the terrorists in this village. In the year 1998 also on a day like today, the terrorists launched a savage attack in the Mankulam area. The troops mooted counter attacks. The battle lasted several hours. However, 42 brave soldiers sacrificed their lives on behalf of the noble freedom of the motherland.
Heavy fighting raged between the valiant soldiers and the tiger terrorists within the Iluppaikulam area on 20th June 1999. Four war heroes gave up their lives in this battle for the freedom of the country. Trincomalee was the next target of the ruthless tiger terrorists on 20th June in the year 2000. Three brave soldiers sacrificed their lives in this assault.
During the conflict period, the terrorists had grabbed a total of 82 lives on 20th June throughout the dark era. This included three innocent civilians. The other 79 were members of the Security Forces who sacrificed their lives on behalf of the unity of the motherland.
President Rajapaksa as the Commander in Chief fulfilled his responsibilities of ending the war to the letter taking fearless decision without succumbing to local as well as external pressure. These decisions were put into action under the guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
As a result of the enormous dedications, the heroic soldiers succeeded in liberating their motherland from the terrorists as they were properly guided by a prudent leadership.
Thus all communities are now living in the country in peace and happiness. Although certain forces are determined to devastate this peaceful environment, the patriotic citizens are not prepared to leave any room for such forces to raise their heads. They have proved this not only by words but even through deeds.
The citizens who love the country never hesitate to teach a fitting lesson to such forces. The photographs of war heroes who made supreme sacrifices to enthrone peace in the motherland are being displayed to the entire world not only in honour of such heroes but also to show respect to their family members.
