The programme to eradicate dengue from the Western Province gets underway. The programme which commenced today will continue until Sunday the 22nd.
The Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry has recorded a total of 14 thousand 703 dengue cases from the island so far within this year. Of this 59 percent of the cases had been reported from the Western Province. As such the Health Ministry has emphasized the need for the continuous destruction of possible mosquito breeding grounds.
The first of a series of programmes for the crackdown on dengue within the Colombo District kicked off from near the Colombo Municipal Council. These initiatives have been taken by the Health Ministry, the Presidential Dengue Task Force and the Colombo Municipal Council, with the support of the Armed Forces and the Police.
The programme to educate the public on the disease commenced with the examination of housing units in the Summit Housing Complex at Jawatte in Colombo today. Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala and many senior officials joined in the occasion.
