Rakwana student killed ... to take Ras. 210 to drink kasippu -- no incident of rape

Last week on both 23rd and 24th two pathetic incidents of homicide were reported of 2 students who were at that time alone in the house. One murder so committed was of a schoolgirl aged 17 years hailing from Giribava area in Kurunegala. She had been watching TV all alone when the assailant in the neighbourhood had entered the house and raped her and then murdered her. The criminal who is supposed to be divorced had been living with his mother and having abused the girl had later killed her with
fear of being apprehended.

The second killing took place exactly the day after in Rakwana, Ratnapura. This schoolgirl that day had been engaged in her Advanced Level studies alone and had been living under the care of her father as the mother was deceased when at that moment a certain man addicted to drugs had come for purposes of robbery and had finally murdered her. The deceased has had a lover and he had been trying to contact her over her mobile phone when he found the phone continuously disconnected on which occasion he had in suspicion informed her father and inquired about it and it was then that it was revealed that she had been murdered inside the home. This schoolgirl, Deepika Priyadarshani aged 19 years from East Batayaya area had been killed for the reason of robbing a small sum of Rs. 210 and to rob her mobile phone, it was revealed at police investigations conducted. 

The schoolgirl had been following her studies in the Arts stream at Pelmadulla Dharmaloka Maha Vidyalaya while her mother had committed suicide about an year ago and she had been living with her father. 

Last week on the 24th her father has left home and set off for work to pluck tea leaves and it was at that time this student had been murdered with her throat being severed. Rakwana Police Officer-in-Charge Mr. B.A.N. Bamunusingha and other officers conducted primary invesrtigations into the murder and even before 24 hours elapsed since the incident they were able to apprehend a 27 year old unmarried man on suspicion. It was revealed at inquiries that this person was someone who had been remanded an year before over yet another case of homicide and later set free. This suspect who had been seriously addicted to alcohol has confessed that he had entered the student's house with the intention of looting money and jewellery to secure funds for drinking and because of shouts raised by the girl he had slit her throat with a knife available in the house. The suspect also exposed that after killing her he had robbed a sum of Rs. 210, a mobile phone and some parts of a silver necklace and soon beat a retreat.

The suspect who later has had a bout of kasippu by paying Rs. 210 had of course retained the robbed mobile phone and parts of the necklace in his possession. The deceased girl's under-clothes were found removed; however no signs of rape were observed, it was revealed at the judicial postmortem coducted at Ratnapura General Hospital. The arrested suspect was produced before Acting Magistrate of Pelmadulla, Mr. Sarath Vijaya Gunawardena and was remaned till 6th of next month.
