Suspicion about mysterious dead body of garment millionaire businessman found in room of Mt. Lavinia Hotel ... murdered or case of suicide?

A mysterious death of a millionaire garment businessman who was admitted to the intensive care unit for a period of 5 days with strange wounds was reported from Kalubowila Hospital last Tuesday.

The deceased, Mohan Chamida Wijayatilleke by name was a 40 year old person who had got married some weeks before. He had been spending his honeymoon with his wife close to the beach at a hotel
called 'House Chandra'. At a time his wife had gone out, 2 friends had come to visit him and as he had not shown any response to them they had informed the hotel authorities and subsequently the door had been opened and on inspection he was found fallen down in the room with strange wounds on his body, it was reported. He was found unconscious with his teeth damaged and there were bruises on his face, it was further reported.

Under these conditions he was admitted to Kalubowila Hospital last 31st and though he was treated at the intensive care unit for 5 days, he had not regained consciousness and had finally passed away. As his relatives had said that his death is suspicious, a special investigation has been launched about it. At the time the coroners visited the hotel premises concerned for the autopsy, the staff of the hotel had cleaned up the place of the incident and cleared the utensils there and it thus became a drawback for judicial procedures.

At the moment when businessman Chaminda Wijayatilleke's body was found in an unconscious state in the room, a sort of strip of cloth had been located and a suspicion has cropped up as to whether he had attempted suicide by strangling himself. Some minor injuries on the face and some teeth being damaged were detected at the autopsy. Judicial Medical Officer Sampath Senathunga returned an open verdict on the death and had forwarded parts of the body to the Goverment Analyst.

It is still not clear whether the death is a homicide or a case of suicide. Numerous rumours have begun to circulate over the death as this death had occured during the honeymoon and the wife had not been present at the time businessman Chaminda was found unconscious. Though some reports were published to the effect that the deceased's wife had been engaged to an Army officer before, she has rejected those reports.

Chaminda Wijayatilleke the young businessman who was connected to the garment industry was a resident down Saranankara Road in Kalubowila and he had entered into marriage with a relative of a powerful Minister of the UNP. Attesting witnesses at this marriage were Otara Gunawardena on his side and Harin Fernando from the wife's side. The wife of the deceased it was said, is an active member of Yovun Peramuna of the UNP.
