The Olympic torch was plunged into Russia’s Lake Baikal, part of the run-up to the Sochi Winter Games. Nikolai Rybachenko lit a water-resistant flare atop the torch before diving into the world’s deepest lake. Russian news reader Ekaterina Andreeva also took part in the dive. The torch has travelled to the North Pole on a Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker and has even been flown into space. It will be used to light the Olympic flame in Sochi on February 7th, marking the start of the 2014 Games that run until February 23rd.
