Today is the Il Full Moon Poya day that marks a number of significant events in the Buddhist calendar.
It was on a Il full moon Poya day that the Buddha delivered his first discourse to the five ascetics at Isipathanaramaya in Banares. It was on such a day that he sent away the first Buddhist missionaries to propagate the dhamma. On his way to Rajagaha he met with Uruvel Kashyapa and 500 followers, who entered the order after listening to his sermons. It was on such a day that he announced that Maitreys Bodhisatva would become the future Buddha.
Religious observances were held at temples throughout the country to mark the day.
The 117th Poya Day Dhamma sermon of the ‘Ama Dam Sisilasa’ series was held at the Temple Trees. The sermon was delivered by Ven. Neluwakande Gnanananda Thera. First Lady Shiranthi Wickramasinghe Rajapaksa, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa and a number of Parliamentarians and Ministers listened to the sermon.
The ITN Poya Day programme ‘Savanak Ras’ was telecast at the Abhayarama temple in Narahenpita.
The Shasanaloka programme of the Lakhanda Radio was also conducted at the temple. Books were provided to the novices and their parents were felicitated.
