CHOGM concludes

The 22nd Commonwealth Heads of State Meeting concluded today after appointing President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the chair.


The CHOGM came to an end at the Waters Edge hotel in Battaramulla after making several major decisions on securing the future of the youth, finding solutions for the climatic change and new investment and business opportunities.

The inaugural ceremony of the 22nd Commonwealth summit was held last Friday at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre under the patronage of the heir to the British throne Prince Charles who represented Queen Elizabeth 11 and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The sessions continued for three days at the BMICH and Waters Edge hotel in Battaramulla under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Heads of State and representatives from 53 countries participated. Although Mauritius was to be awarded the host status for 2015 summit, the plans had to be altered due to its boycott of the summit. The request made by the Prime Minister of Malta to hold the next conference in 2015 was granted. President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced the decisions made at the CHOGM and its conclusion. Foreign and local journalists were provided the opportunity ask questions. Answering the questions the President called for assistance for unification of the country and not for separation. He said that the Sri Lankans are currently leading free lives and called for support to continue the situation.
