Japan is providing 160 million rupees in grant aid for humanitarian demining in the North.
Japan has been a major donor supporting mine clearance in Sri Lanka to accelerate the return and resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons and to facilitate recommencement of agriculture and other livelihood activities of returnees. Since 2003, the Government of Japan has given a sum of 27 million US Dollars for demining in the North and the East under its Grant Assistance Schemes.
The two grant contracts were signed by Japan’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Nobuhito Hobo and two institutions engaged in the removal of mines. The contracts were signed at the Japanese Ambassador’s official residence.
