Centre producing unsuitable food for human consumption is raided

Officials of the Consumer Affairs Authority have raided an establishment which was engaged in the production of food unsuitable for human consumption.


Officials of the Consumer Affairs Authority took into custody 5000 kilograms of Chillie powder and 3000 kilograms of saffron powder unsuitable for human consumption and also 2000 kilograms of old bread crumbs. Officials who were involved in the raid said that its total value exceeded three million rupees. It was found that this chillie powder and saffron powder had been produced by pounding old bread crumbs and thereafter adding fabric power which had been clearly stipulated should also be used only for textiles. The Consumer Affairs Authority said that the raid was conducted on a tip off received by Minister Johnston Fernando.

In the meantime, the Hatton Police succeeded in apprehending a person who was engaged in the process of mixing dust tea unsuitable for human use along with tea leaves suitable for drinking. The Police said that the racket was being carried out in a shop at the Hatton Public Market.
