All communities should get together further strengthening national unity and confront challenges from the international community.
The patriotic fraternity laid this emphasis appraising the media in Colombo on the National Unity Congress which is aimed at co-existence through equality and diversity.
The inauguration of the National Unity Congress will be held at the BMICH on the 07th of April under the patronage of the President. The Congress is being organized under the guidance of the Ministry of Languages and Social Integration. The prime aim of this Conference is to defeat attempts made by local as well as international groups to destabilize the country which is moving forward after ending terrorism. The pledge for national unity will be announced through this conference bringing together veterans in various fields.
Former Vice-Chancellor of the Eastern University Jazeema Ismail said that she is a Muslim woman. But if anyone queries as to who she is, she would like to describe herself as a Sri Lankan woman. It is the vital aspect of national unity. She said that everyone should rise up as one nation leaving aside communal and religious differences. It is then only local as well international forces against national unity can be routed. She underscored the need to create a better future with equality that all communities would enjoy the benefits of peace, freedom and development.
Sri Lanka’s Spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan said that mistakes were committed by everyone including the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims in the past few decades. The country had to face dangerous repercussions during the period in which terrorism reigned in the country. There is no war in the country and every community can live in freedom. Development is what is most important today. The benefits of freedom and development should be passed on to those who were tormented by terrorism. Muralitharan mentioned it should be emphasized that the present Government was doing its utmost in this respect. But the Government alone cannot bestow prosperity and coexistence. He added that everyone should collectively extend support.
Many veteran artistes and those representing several fields also expressed their views at this media briefing.
