Dark memories on 21st February

Add comments

No one can forget the brutalism of the tiger terrorists. The number of lives lost as a result of the barbaric insurgency is inestimable. They unleashed terror and took away many lives to quench their thirst for blood.

They did so flagrantly violating human rights. Today too we recount the atrocities committed by these savage terrorists during the dark era.

The terrorists on 21 February 1992 took away the lives of 20 war heroes unleashing an attack on a group of Air Force road inspectors in the Weppakulam area in Vavuniya and embarked on their killing spree on 21st February during the dark era. Three war heroes lost their lives following a terrorist assault in the Ratmalana area on 21st February 1997.

The sea tigers unleashed an attack on a fleet of trawlers of the Sri Lanka Navy in the Chalai sea belt on 21st February in the year 2002. Three brave naval ratings sacrificed their lives on behalf of the unity of the country. On the same day five innocent civilians lost their lives in an assault launched by the terrorists at the PLOTE office in the Rambakulam area in Vavuniya.

In the year 2007 also on a day like today, the terrorists killed two war heroes in the Ottamavadi area. Two attacks were carried out by the terrorists in the Adampan and Kokkuthudawai areas on 21st February 2008. As a result four war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country. The next target of the terrorists on 21st February in the year 2009 was Nelliadi. In this brutal attack, the tiger terrorists sans any sympathy had ruthlessly attacked and slaughtered 14 civilians, shocking the entire country.

It was due to the total dedication of the war heroes with the Commander in Chief that the final shot on the insurgency was fired bringing an end to the destruction of human lives by these barbaric terrorists. 18th May 2009 was that historic day. However, by then the total number of lives taken away by the terrorists on 21st February throughout the fear psychosis period was 62. This included 21 innocent civilians. The other 41 were gallant soldiers.

The heroic soldiers enthroned total freedom in the motherland by advancing in the humanitarian operations, following the direct decisions taken by President Rajapaksa and the prudent guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. The war heroes did so even making supreme sacrifices on behalf of the motherland. The war heroes carried out these operations while safeguarding the lives of innocent civilians, fully protecting human rights and adhering to the Geneva Convention. But the United States and Britain were making allegations of human rights on such a group of war heroes, not mainly because they cannot identify the nature of the real protectors of human rights but because of their malicious hypocrisy.

The international mass media during the last few months had revealed with evidence the flagrant human rights violations committed by these countries. But a majority are astonished as to why neither these countries nor human rights organizations are reluctant to talk about these human rights violations. The people who love the country are not prepared to betray the freedom won with many dedications and they will not hesitate to come forward to protect the motherland in the face of any force. They have proven this to the world on many occasions.
