There is no truth in the propaganda mooted by certain media on the Mihindusethpura Housing Scheme which has been vested in the people.
Residents in the Mihindusethpura says that no one should undermine such people’s schemes based on political hypocrisy.
The Mihindusethpura Housing Scheme was launched under the programme of giving fully fledged flats to people who lived with less facilities within the Colombo City environment. The Project comprising 820 housing units was vested in the public under the auspices of President Rajapaksa granting the ownership of a house to indigent families. This housing Scheme which is operative under the total supervision of the Urban Development Authority, has all the basic facilities. But a majority are disgusted over the attempts made by certain political conspirators displaying their deceitfulness through the media undermining the housing scheme as well as the residents of the Scheme.
The media had reported that these housing units lack space and the furniture given when these were vested in them had been re-taken.
However, the residents of the Scheme denied these allegations and said they are living happily in these houses enjoying benefits which they had hitherto not enjoyed.
Each housing unit has a floor space of 450 square feet. The space of each unit of all the housing Schemes that are coming up in affiliation to the Colombo City is 450 square feet. The Government decided to build houses with such space, taking into consideration several factors.
Further elucidating, the Chairman of the Urban Development Authority Nimal Perera said that they did not consider the number of individuals of a family but the total space of the houses in which they are residing. Accordingly they found that of the 68,212, sixty to seventy percent were living in an area less than 200. Some are living in a space of 35 square feet.. It meant that only a bed could be placed. He said that considering such factors they decided to build the houses with 450 square feet.
