The Indian Supreme Court has restrained the Tamil Nadu Government from releasing the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a statement in New Delhi pointed out that the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi was an attack on India’s soul and that the release of his killers would be “contrary to all principles of justice.”
The Indian Supreme Court said that there have been procedural lapses by the Tamil Nadu Government in its decision to release the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The Centre had sought a stay from the Supreme Court on Tamil Nadu Government’s decision to release all the seven convicts.
Appearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam, Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran pleaded for a stay saying the state government should not be allowed to release the prisoners. The Indian Supreme Court recently commuted the death sentences imposed on the tiger terrorists who assassinated Rajiv Gandhi. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha yesterday announced that according to powers vested in the State Government action would be initiated to release these convicts. Although she had made this announcement the nod of the Central Government is necessary to do so. But the Indian Government had objected to it.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had expressed sadness over the state government’s decision to release the convicts of his father’s killers. Reacting to the news Rahul queried if a Prime Minister’s killers can be released, what kind of justice could the common man expect? It is reported that the Bharathiya Janatha Party, the main opposition had also rejected the release of the convicts. Political analysts pointed out that Jayalalitha had decided to release the convicts, targeting the forthcoming elections. However, the Central Government opposing the move, the Tamil Nadu Government is not in a position to release the terrorist prisoners.
