9000 motor accidents have so far been reported this year.
The number of accidents that have so far occurred from the first of January this year throughout the island is around 9000. Statistics indicate that 800 persons had been killed in these accidents.
The Police said that a majority of the accidents are attributed to the negligence of drivers and drunk driving. Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the law was being strictly enforced against drivers who flout motor vehicle regulations, irrespective of their stature.
He revealed that the number of drunk drivers arrested and produced in Courts last year was 52 thousand. The number of drunk drivers so far apprehended from January first this year was 15 thousand 384.
38 thousand motor accidents were reported last year while the fatality figure was 2350.
