Work on the Police Special Investigation Unit to deal with complaints related to religious activities gets underway.
The President emphasized the need for the establishment of a Special Police Unit to inquire into various complaints made with respect to religious activities.
Accordingly the Special Police Unit concerned was opened at the Ministry for Buddhist and Religious Affairs this morning under the auspices of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne. This Special Police Unit will be accepting complaints with effect from today.
Secretary to the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs M.K.B. Dissanayake said that places of religious worship are spread throughout the island and the people profess their faith according to their beliefs. But disputes arise due to the law being overlooked. This Special Unit with special coordination can investigate these minor incidents and sort them out before it goes beyond control.
Inspector General of Police N.K. Ilangakoon said this Special Unit will handle complaints from every part of the island. Accordingly if any issue with respect to any religion arises, it is better to lodge the complaint with this Unit rather than visiting the Police in the areas concerned.
Complaints can be lodged personally or could be faxed on the two given numbers. Accordingly the IGP said that the Special Unit will be dealing with complaints directed from any part of the island.
The work will be carried out under the supervision of Western Province Senior DIG Anura Senanayake and the guidance of SSP Ranjith Kodituwakku.
Any complaint with regard to obstructions for religious harmony can be directed to this Special Police Unit. The Contact numbers are 0112 30 76 74 or 0112 30 76 97. The fax numbers are 0112 30 76 88 and 0112 30 74 06.
