President calls on nurses to discharge services earning public accolades

The President has appealed to the nurses to discharge their service properly earning the honour of the people. It will serve as victory for them as well as the country. The President was addressing the National Nurses Day Commemoration.


Marking International Nurses Day, the national Nurses Day commemoration was held at the BMICH this morning under the patronage of President Rajapaksa. More than 5000 nurses participated in this commemoration ceremony. This year’s International Nurses Day theme was “A Force for Change – A Vital Resource for Health.” Representatives of Nurses Unions presented mementoes to the President for the memorable services discharged by him to strengthen the local Nurses Service. Evaluation gifts were presented by the President to some Nurses acclaiming their services.


Addressing the gathering, the President emphatically stated that while safeguarding their professional rights and identity, it was the obligation and responsibility of the nurses to fulfil their services towards the people of the country. The era to struggle to win the professional rights risking lives has been ended. The Government has done its utmost to win the rights of the staff. As such the President declared that they should discharge their duties properly identifying their responsibilities.


The President said that there was an era in which the rights of the nurses could not be discussed as these were demanded by a monk. A bomb was hurled at the Abhayarama temple to continuously talking about the rights of nurses. No one is talking about it today. The President said that the rights of the nurses can be secured through cordial discussions rather than staging work stoppages. No demonstrations were held for the formulation and approval of the Nurses Minutes, the uniform allowance was granted, the accident allowance was increased, overtime was granted and the Nurses Council was appointed. He recalled the struggles launched in the past to secure a single demand and how much lives had to be sacrificed. Especially the nurses should think of their service to the Health Service similarly to winning their rights.


While strengthening the health services and providing the services to the public, the President said that facilities were also being granted to the nurses. He referred to the noble services that are being discharged by the nurses. He added that the people judge them by their service.


President of the Public Service United Nurses Union the Ven. Muruttettuwegama Ananda Thera, Ministers Maithripala Sirisena and Rajitha Senaratne, Deputy Minister Lalith Dissanayake and many people’s representatives were present at the commemoration ceremony.
