President re-opens refurbished Central Point building

The Central Point building which is more than 100 years old has been refurbished and declared open. The opening took place under the patronage of President Rajapaksa this morning.


The Central Point building is located on Chatham Street in Colombo Fort. It is more than 100 years old. President Rajapaksa declared open this morning the Central Bank’s Economic History Museum which is located in the now-refurbished building.

The construction of the building which commenced in the year 1911 was completed in 1914. The building which was in a dilapidated condition following the terrorist attack unleashed by the terrorists on the Central Bank was refurbished under the guidance of Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Gotabhaya Rajapaksa restoring its pristine glory.

All floors of the building have been reconstructed and declared open by the President. The President also opened to the public an exhibition titled “Puranayen Vivaharayata Gath Mudal.” Accordingly the coins used in the past will exhibited to the public from today.

The handing over of the new 500 rupee note issued to mark the Commonwealth Summit to the President took place at the hands of Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabral.

Among those present on the occasion were Chief Justice Mohan Peiris, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
