Prizes awarded to competitions organized on behalf of Commonwealth

The President handed over awards to winners of competitions organized on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.


Art, Oratorical and Essay competitions were organized in parallel to the Commonwealth Summit. The President handed over gifts to winners of these competitions. The event was organized at the Presidential Secretariat. School children who secured the first, second and third places in these competitions organized at the nation al level secured gifts and certificates.

The competitions were jointly organized by the Education Ministry and the Sub Committee on Commonwealth Social Affairs. The aim of the competitions was to provide a practical awareness to the children on the Commonwealth, the importance of staging the Commonwealth Summit in Sri Lanka and on the benefits the country would receive. More than 15,000 children joined in these competitions.

A notable feature was the holding of the competitions in the Sinhala, Tamil and English media. Ministers Prof. G.L. Peiris, Bandula Gunawardena, Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge, Foreign Secretary Karunatilake Amunugama, Education Secretary Anura Dissanayake and Chairperson of the Sub Committee on Commonwealth Social Affairs Indrani Sugathadasa were among those present on the occasion.
