Protests banned in Colombo until Sunday

Add comments

Processions and demonstrations within the Colombo Municipal Council limits are banned from tomorrow until Sunday the 17th. A court order has been issued in this regard, following a request made by the Police due to the implementation of a special programme related to the Commonwealth Summit security.

Further making clarifications in this respect, Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the Police had received information that arrangements were being made to stage protests at certain locations in Colombo from today until the 17th obstructing the movement of traffic and causing hindrance to the public during the period the Commonwealth Summit is being staged. They also had information that these demonstrations were being organized by eleven persons.

Accordingly, SSP Ajith Rohana said that the Cinnamon Gardens Police brought this to the notice of the Colombo chief Magistrate’s Court today. If such protests were staged, the Police traffic plan would be paralysed. The Police Media Spokesman said that there are special roads where the traffic plan will be operative.

Priorities have been given on the roads to ambulances and various problems would arise if there were any obstructions. There is no possibility of organizing any protest on routes which are being used for CHOGM from today until the 17th. He added that the Police will have to take action if anyone breaches the law.
