Multipurpose Gamma Irradiation Facility opened in Biyagama

Sri Lanka’s first Multipurpose Gamma Irradiation Plant has been established.


The country first Multipurpose Gamma Irradiation Plant has been set up in the Biyagama Investment Promotion Zone. It opening took place under the patronage of Ministers Basil Rajapaksa and Patalie Champika Ranawaka. It will be an impetus to development in many fields including Medical and Agricultural sectors. The establishment of this plant will facilitate the sterilization of medical equipment, the destruction of micro-organisms, preservation of food and the production of new industrial raw materials. The new Multipurpose Gamma Irradiation Facility will help save valuable foreign exchange that is drained out of the country for import of sterilized material. It will also be possible to generate many jobs and also launch new factories through new industrial raw materials.


Minister Basil Rajapaksa said that a massive expenditure is incurred when gloves used in the health sector are sent abroad for sterilization. It was not possible for these products to compete with the imported products.


He said that it is the intention of the Minister to expand the Plant so that it could be used by vegetable and fruit exporters.


Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said that the Gamma Irradiation Plant will be making a significant contribution to the science and technology field and the economy. It upgrades the country in the advanced technology process through nuclear technology. The Minister pointed that that is also supports Sri Lanka’s exports by adhering to accepted international standards.
