Sri Lanka is geared to carry out the world’s first census on those killed, disappeared and injured and also the devastated property as a result of ethnic, political and terrorist conflicts.

Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration P.B. Abeykoon said that the census will be carried out based on the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission. Addressing the media today, he was optimistic that it would be possible to gather genuine information through the census on those killed, disappeared and injured from the year 1982.

Director General of the Department of Census and Statistics D.C.A. Gunawardena pointed out that the census will be carried out by visiting every household at the Grama Niladhari Division.

Mr. Gunawardena said that they had summoned all officials of the Department at the Divisional Secretariat Divisions to Colombo and given them a training for the conduct of this census. Headed by the Grama Niladhari, he mentioned that they have selected one or two officials based on the number of houses so that they could complete this exercise within a short period.
