Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa had participated at a meeting of the Farmer’s Front

yesterday at the Abhayaramaya Viharaya premises in Narahenpita. While speaking he had said that those who joined the national united government seeking Ministerial portfolios are those who are devoid of backbones.



Answering to questions posed by media reporters he had quipped in that manner. When he was questioned on the proposed amendment to the 19th constitution in Parliament he had said that he had studied it deeply but however there appears to have some clauses which are puzzling and not clear.

cricket world cup, retired from all forms of cricket. With the dissolving of the SLC and an interim committee was formed under the chairmanship of former cricketer Sidath Wettimuny.



Mahela Jayawardena has received an invitation to accept a new post as SLC’s adviser on school cricket. For this proposal Mahela had agreed as he is now available full time to devote on the game.

A teenage girl studying in a school in Pusselawa had failed in her Mathematics subject for the

second time. She had viewed her own results from the department of examination web site when no one was present at home via the internet.



Her parents are both teachers. It was revealed that she had committed suicide after seen her results, closing the door in her room and hanging herself. Her sister had seen the scene when she had peeped through the window of their house.

The President Maithripala Sirisena who toured China to meet

the Chinese President and other government representatives to enhance the existing bilateral relationships and to discuss further on projects undertaken and on future projects had returned to Sri Lanka at 12.20a.m today (31st) morning.



It was very unfortunate that he could not attend the funeral of his youngest brother, businessman Priyantha Sirisena who during his absence had succumbed to his injuries sustained when a close friend of his had attacked him with a sharp knife.

Further to a complaint lodged by an official of the presidential secretarial unit to the criminal

investigation unit on the 14-01-2015 the police had revealed the numbers of all vehicles including motor cycles for the public to know. The criminal investigation unit needs to know; who are the persons who are in possession of any of these vehicles as they need to bring them to book .They also need to find whether they have been abandoned at any place.

The Magistrate of the magistrates courts Kaduwela, Dammika Hemapala on hearing the case against former Minister of economic

development Basil Rajapaksa for charges framed against him on huge misappropriation of government funds from the ‘Divi Neguma’ accounts under the administrative purview of the ministry of Economic development had ordered him to be arrested on arrival.



When the case was taken up for hearing the senior lawyer of Basil Rajapaksa U.R de Silva appearing on his behalf had conveyed to the Kaduwela Magistrate that the former Minister had proceeded to America for medical treatment and would return shortly.


These funds amounting to rupees million 70 had been misappropriated under the pretext of spending for the exhibitions of ‘divi neguma’ summit in the year 2006..He is also accused and is the main suspect in the amount of rupees 145 lakhs misappropriated for repairing 04 numbers Mihin Air aircrafts and many other frauds committed in the year 2008 as revealed by the Financial Frauds Investigation unit on investigations concluded. The case had been filed by the FFIU in the courts.

Faizer to be given a cabinet portfolio!


It is known from reliable government and political circles and sources that very soon may

be even today or tomorrow 09 Members of Parliament of the SLFP would be appointed and sworn in as cabinet ministers and as junior ministers.



Among them there is one senior female Member of Parliament of the SLFP also. The former defected Minister Faizer Mustapha who crossed over to the Maithipala Sirisena faction before the presidential election and was given the post of Minister, civil aviation but resigned his portfolio citing reasons as he needed to continue his established profession as a reputed lawyer is also to be given a cabinet minister post.



All these appointments of cabinet and junior ministers are to be made soon after President Maithripala Sirisena returns from his official tour of China.

Yesterday the 29th it is reported that a young

foreign Lass who had been sitting on the edge of the steps in a train compartment plying from Matara to Colombo near the Paiyagala railway station. The incident had taken place around 5.30 p.m.She had been thrown away and her body been disfigured beyond identification owing to several injuries sustained and hence she cannot be easily identified it was said. According to the Paiyagala Police she is a young Lass around 25 years old.



It has been revealed that she may have been thrown away while seated on the edge of the steps in the compartment of a train she had travelled near the Paiyagala railway station. On the instructions of the Officer in charge of the Paiyagala Police, Sub Inspector Janaka Vithange,the traffic OIC Sub Inspector W.B Dayantha and his team are conducting investigations into this incident.

The Sigiriya rock is visited by many locals and

tourists and is a place that is possessing tremendous historical and cultural significance and as a place of high archaeological value. The Minister of cultural affairs and arts Nandamithra Ekanayake speaking to ‘Rivira’ newspaper has quipped that he has suggested to the Director General of the archaeological department and to the Director central cultural fund to implement his suggestion to fix a ‘lift’ to facilitate easy passage to view the rock for its historical and archaeological values for all those who patronise. The climbing then would be made easier for elders and those handicapped.



Once this is implemented would boost the tourist industry and could earn a much bigger revenue than at present, the Minister had further added.

The elections commissioner, Mahinda Deshapriya has arranged a meeting with the leaders of all the

political parties today to discuss the new electoral system to elect the Members of Parliament from the next election. It has been proposed that 250 members would be elected according to the new system.



In the election commissioner’s proposal there would be 140 elected on the basis of electoral seats while 80 would be elected from the existing preferential system. If all the leaders of the parties agree to this proposal there would be a provision for 30 Members from the National list.



This would be decided with discussions between the Elections Commissioner, the Director General of Surveys and the party leaders to be held today. If they all agree a final meeting would held on the April 06th.The proposal would be presented to the house on the 20th and an amendment to the existing election system act would be tabled.
