Swarnavahini Live Chart Show goes on non-stop -- changes made in dialogue -- Rahul still 'on his feet'

Swarnavahini Live Chart Show goes on non-stop -- changes made in dialogue -- Rahul still 'on his feet'

A big talk went round internet last week because of an aggressive remark made by a certain announcer of Swarnavahini as response to a call by a listener to the effect that it is not suitable to conduct a Live Chart Show at a time when incidents of a sorrowful nature are being reported because of a situation of disaster in the country.

Though various people published requests asking that programmes of this type be temporarily stopped, Swarnavahini has still not acceded to their pleas as such to temporarily curtail such programmes. The Live Chart Show which is broadcast on Tuesday and day-before-yesterday Monday in the evenings was presented as usual by this channel. However, this programme which was presented this week had taken a different 'facelift' this time in contrary to the one presented earlier in an entertainment mood by Kavindya - Rahul. In addition the aid given and the victims concerned were continuously spoken of about with songs being broadcast in the process.

Whatever it is, no action has been taken by the channel over the referred to programme of Kavindya - Rahul which incident created some uproar recently and it was broadcast even yesterday beforehand that the two of them would be handling the programme next week too. In any case it has been detected that some private channels have temporarily suspended programmes of like- nature by now. Certain channels have been noted to have broadcast old recorded programmes as a substitute at those relevant times. How Live Chart Show talk took a different turn at yesterday's programme can be seen, below

Though implied that Mrs. Top of the World crown was clinched by Oshadhi ... it was Barbara who really won it!

Tele-actress Oshadhi Hewamadduma gave a description yesterday across her Facebook Page that she achieved victory from among married participants at the beauty queen contest held in Lativia; but it has now been revealed that she had not won the contest concerned! As a matter of fact it is contestant Barbara Monica who represented Belgium who won that crown. However, on inquiries made from international opinion of
that contest by 'People's Voice', Oshadhi had been successful in winning just one event (one title) only. (As a result that crown went in her favour).

Oshadhi has gone as far as giving the impression that she has won the beauty queen crown in her Facebook Page but failed to mention in her statement that she was not able to clinch the main crown of the contest. Though the contest came to a close on 28th night, true details were published across the international media at a later time. This contest was not the World Mrs. Beauty Queen Contest and in fact was a contest by the name of 'Mrs. Top of the World' organised annually by a certain organisation in Lituania. Seen below is how Oshadhi has published accounts about it in the Facebook and on the contrary, details appearing in Mrs. Top of the World Facebook Page

4 members of same family die automatically when enjoying electricity through generator because of power-cut for floods

As a result of the flood situation prevalent in Morawaka recently there had been a power-cut in Rotumba village too in the vicinity and it was announced that power would remain disconnected until such time disaster situations will be restored to normalcy. Under these conditions 4 members of a certain family in a house in Rotumba area who had
purchased fuel and activated a generator in the house and proceeded to attend to their daily activities have faced an unanticipated accident.

The mother, father, son and daughter all of the same family have succumbed to death as a result of this mishap and the deaths have occured at a time when they had activated the generator and switched on the fans and gone to sleep after that, it is reported.

The generator had been affixed inside the house concerned and when it was functioning the carbon monoxide gas emanating from it has been circulating within the house itself and it is suspected that as a consequence all of them had embraced death because of the poisonous gas. Swarnavahini announcer loses temper over question asked about conducting Live Chart Show

Swarnavahini announcer loses temper over question asked about conducting Live Chart Show

The answer given by the announcer to a question posed by a female during a live programme by the name of 'Top ten super hits' broadcast over Swarnavahini Channel this morning (27) has by now caused some dialogue within social circles.

The question posed was whether an entertainment-inclined live chart show such as this being presented at a time when hundreds of people have died with thousands of others being displaced is
justified or not. When room was not left for the question to be asked and finished with those handling operations blocking it, the new announcer Rahul responded saying that there are two sides to the question and that just because some disaster takes place other media networks too do not refrain from conducting their programmes and that Swarnavahini also conducts those programmes. He further continued by retorting that "if there happens to be an issue in the country would you wait without eating rice" which then was his antagonistic proverbial response. Later when finishing his reply he had finished saying "Don't make me lose my temper!" thus swallowing other comments which came to his mind.

Whatever it is, Kavindya Adhikari who functioned on that occasion as the female announcer having immediately grasped that the reply given by her counterpart was not that favourable then went on to bring forward other matters such as "we prayed in this connection ... we wished ... we help". But the call received by her was mentioned by her as 'a disturbing call'.

Viewers of social websites watching this incident over and over again had condemned the act of the announcer losing his temper. Rupavahini channels which report floods and sorrows of those deaths at nighttime news broadcasts on a competitive level within the scope of their programme orientation not bringing up that feeling subjected to attention, was criticised. Apart from this, to what extent the point of broadcasting frequencies belonging to the public on an annual licence fee on a lease method with the sole motive of earning money is justified as humiliating the audience in questioning about it was subjected to discussion. Death toll rises upto 122 -- surrounding areas of Nilwala Ganga still exposed to risk -- several Southern Expressway roads closed for traffic

Death toll rises upto 122 -- surrounding areas of Nilwala Ganga still exposed to risk -- several Southern Expressway roads closed for traffic

Death toll rises upto 122 -- surrounding areas of Nilwala Ganga still exposed to risk -- several Southern Expressway roads closed for traffic

The death toll of persons who died as a result of floods and landslides has risen upto 122 by today (28). The number missing has been estimated to be about 100. Deputy Director of Disaster Management Centre Mr. Pradeep Kodippily has reported that close upon 2 lakhs (230,571) have become victims in this connection.

The Irrigation Department on the other hand say that water levels of Nilwala Ganga still remains at 'big floods' level while Bandaththara Dam of Nilwala Ganga has reached a risky stage. As a result of
such circumstances residents in adjoining areas have been cautioned to reach safety locations. Because of the risk of banks of Nilwala Ganga giving way, residents of a number of regions in Matara were evacuated last night (27) itself from those areas. On a query posed about this condition this morning (28) officers of Disaster Management Centre of Matara said that the risk of the dam of Nilwala Ganga is still seen as a threat. Though operations have commenced to remove soil at the river-mouth where Nilwala Ganga falls into the sea, it has not turned out to be a feasible strategy as such because the water is subsiding at a very slow speed. As water is observed as leaking from various points from Baddegama Dam, people have been cautioned to exercise vigilance. Activities related to repairs of spots where leakages are observed have commenced with the support of the Sri Lankan Navy.

In the meantime obstructions have cropped up where transport activities of the Southern Expressway are concerned, the Road Development Authority announce. Because of torrential rain some access points along Southern Expressway are temporarily closed. Because of flood problems between Dodangoda and Gelanigama both lanes of the Exprssway route have been hampered where movement of traffic is concerned, police say. Traffic along the Expressway route from Pinnaduwa to Matara was suspended last night (27). A spokesman of the Expressway mentioned that roads connected to access points of Imaduwa, Kokmaduwa and Godagama have submerged under water, which is the reason for such a situation. In the meantime traffic coming from the direction of Colombo are expected to exit from Welipenna access point and could once again enter the Expressway from Gelanigama access point. The Road Development Authority say that motorists driving along Southern Expressway could on any emergency dial 1969 to secure any information necessary.

The Weather Department announces that an increase of rainy conditions could be anticipated once again. As stated in that announcement certain areas could experience heavy showers leading to a value of about 75 mm and there would be showers or thunder showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North West Provinces. As the speed of the wind is expected to go up as far as 60 - 70 kms per hour in coastal area around the island, the seas could be rough in those coastal areas.

Situation of great flood of Nilwala Ganga overflowing, by Sunday afternoon (video)

A similar situation as the disaster which struck Colombo with Kelani Ganga overflowing in 2016 has been repeated by now with Matara and its environs encountering a situation with Nilwala Ganga overflowing.

situation will ease. The situation there as it stands this afternoon Sunday 26th was explained by Matara District Secretary as follows and the video carrying related pictures of the disaster, from below

Reaches 6.4 level ... but recedes -- risk of "big floods" of Kelani Ganga blows away

Reaches 6.4 level ... but recedes -- risk of "big floods" of Kelani Ganga blows away

Director of Hydrology Mrs. Prema Hettiaarachchi informs that the 'big floods' risk of Kelani Ganga overflooding has not occured though Irrigation Department had issued a warning about such a situation last afternoon.

During the course of a news briefing last afternoon she mentioned that if the water level meter of  Nagalagamveediya which remained at a value of 5.3 happened to exceed 7, a 'big floods' situation was bound to occur. Though that value was reported to be at a value of 6.4 at approximately 10 in the night, there were signs that the said value
was receding during nighttime. Thus this morning (27) she has informed that the 'big floods' situation is tending to drift away. As such, it appears that there would not be a damage similar to that which took place in the year 2016. value of 5.3 happened to exceed 7, a 'big floods' situation was bound to occur. Though that value was reported to be at a value of 6.4 at approximately 10 in the night, there were signs that the said value was receding during nighttime. Thus this morning (27) she has informed that the 'big floods' situation is tending to drift away. As such, it appears that there would not be a damage similar to that which took place in the year 2016. However this situation may take a different turn depending on the rainfall in the next few days.

Whatever it is, because of the normal flood condition of Kelani Ganga overflowing, a number of low-lying areas in the environs have gone under water. What the Irrigation Department said was that low-lying lands adjoining Avissawella, Hanwella, Dompe, Kolonnawa and Kelaniya have come under water this way. According to the announcement of caution issued to public living on either side of Kelani Ganga by Disaster Management Centre, over 3000 people had left abandoned the said locality by nighttime yesterday.

Impending risk of Kelani Ganga overflowing once again and risks of accidents in Ratnapura, Galle, Matara and Kalutara from rains -- 8 deaths with several persons missing

Several incidents of mishaps were reported as a result of heavy showers experienced yesterday in most parts of the country including Ratnapura, Galle, Matara and Kalutara Districts. If there is a downpour for the next 6 hours the Irrigation Department has issued a warning signal that there is a risk of major flood levels occuring in relation to Kelani Ganga. Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippily of Disaster Management Centre has made a request for residents on both sides of Kelani Ganga to be vigilant in this connection.

There had been a landslide reported in Bulathsinghala, Mahagama, Bowatta areas and it is learned
that at the time of the landslide there had been several people at that spot. After rescue teams had approached the place with difficulty it was reported this morning that 6 persons had died and that 4 were missing. 2 females have died in Heiyantuduwa, Sapugaskanda area with a wall of a height of 20 feet associated with an earthslip falling on top of a house. In the meantime, one person has been washed away by a torrent of water in Kahawatta, Beliatta. Padukka in Colombo District was covered by water, it was reported.

Steps have been taken to evacuate people in low-lying areas including Neluwa, Habarakada, Morawaka, Yakkalamulla, Imaduwa, Walpola, Baddegama, Thawalama, Nagoda and Weliwitiya because of water levels of Gin Ganga and Nilwala Ganga rising. Police say that as a result of heavy showers and windy conditions affecting Hungama area, a distance of about 8 kms on Tangalla - Kataragama Road has been covered by water. As such, police warns the public to refrain from approaching such areas. As the water level of Kalu Ganga too has risen, Disaster Management Centre has cautioned that those living in low-lying areas should be vigilant under such conditions. Palinda City, Bulathsinghala and Agalawatta areas too have come under water, it was reported. As Kirima Oya has overflowed, people in low-lying areas such as Matara - Kamburupitiya and Mulatiyana have been advised to move away from those areas, by the Disaster Management Centre.

Because of the torrential rain that fell on Ratnapura District, Kalawana, Elapatha, Ayagama, Kiriella and Eheliyagoda areas have been more affected. In the meantime, as a result of heavy rains which affected Tangalla, Tangalla - Weeraketiya Road and Tangalla - Tissa Road have gone under water, police say.

The Navy and Air Force have been deployed to rescue people in areas that have come under water. During the 21 hour period ending at 5.30 am this morning (26) the highest rainfall was recorded from Sabaragamuwa area which was 196.7 meters. According to reports released by the Weather Department heavy showers were reported from various regions in Ratnapura and Kegalle Districts. In the same way, the Weather Department say that showers exceeding a value of over 150 mms could be experienced today too in various parts of the island.
