No one can forget the 30-year dark period during which terrorism plagued the country. The number of lives taken away by terrorists is inestimable.
Although terrorism had been uprooted some are yet determined to return the country to that fear psychosis period. The nature of the bloodlust of tiger terrorists is recalled in this episode.
The tiger terrorists killed two war heroes in the Padaviya area on 19th December 1984 and thus embarked on their killing spree on this day throughout the dark period. On 19th December 1986, the terrorists unleashed an attack on group of soldiers near the Pankulama Bridge in Trincomalee. The country was deprived of the valuable services of six brave soldiers.
Again on 19th December 1997, fighting raged between the war heroes and the tiger terrorists at Mankulam and Elephant Pass. The war heroes mooted counter attacks. However, eight soldiers made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country. A mortar attack was unleashed on a security bunker in affiliation to the Kilaly Lagoon on 19th December in the year 2000. Two soldiers were killed in this assault.
In the year 2008 on a day like today, several skirmishes were reported in the Iranamadu, Kilinochchi and Kumalamunai areas. 13 war heroes were killed as a result of these attacks. They sacrificed their lives on behalf of the unity of the country.
When terrorism was uprooted from the country on 18th May 2009, the remorseless terrorists had taken away the lives of three civilians and 46 war heroes on 19th December throughout the fear psychosis period.
The war heroes mooting the operation to annihilate terrorism from the country due to the direct policy decisions taken by President Rajapaksa enthroned permanent peace in the country. However, certain forces are initiating action to destroy the peaceful environment enjoyed by all communities.
These groups which are reticent on the inhuman murders committed by countries such as Britain and the United States are making allegations that the Sri Lankan Government had transgressed human rights. But it has already been proven that these allegations are unfounded and baseless and were mooted to achieve vindictive motives. The liberation of more than 300 thousand civilians from the clutches of the terrorists and directing them to lead normal lives is a clear example as to how the war heroes had safeguarded human rights.
