President begins official tour of the Middle East

President Rajapaksa begins a state visit to the Middle East.

The President left the Katunayake International Airport this morning embarking on an official tour of the Middle East.


The Presidential Media Unit said that the President will be visiting Jordan, Palestine and Israel.

President Rajapaksa who first reached Jordan this afternoon commencing his Middle East tour will meet the King of Jordan, Abdulla Al Hussein.

Thereafter he will travel to Palestine on a two-day state visit and will hold bilateral discussions with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. This will be the first visit of a Sri Lankan Head of State to Palestine.

In Palestine, President Rajapaksa will pay floral tributes to former President Yasser Arafat’s mausoleum. He will also meet members of the Sri Lanka Palestine Friendship Association in which he was also a former President and will visit the Holy Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

Thereafter the President will make a two-day state visit to Israel where he is slated to hold talks with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa and a delegation of Sri Lankan representatives are accompanying the President.
