President Rajapaksa visited the Kataragama Sacred Area to secure blessings for the New Year.
The President who reached the historic Kataragama Sacred Area last night participated in special religious observances near Kirivehera. Members of the Maha Sangha chanted Seth Pirith and blessed the President. The President exchanged pleasantries with devotees present at Kirivehera and extended his greetings to them for the New Year.
The President was also present at the Pirith chanting organized at the Kataragama Sacred site annually on 31st December in memory of the Late Prime Ministers S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and Sirimavo Bandaranaike.
With the dawn of the New Year, the President visited the Kataragama Maha Devale at midnight and attended a pooja. He also visited the other Devales at the premises to secure blessings. The President also seized the opportunity of visiting the Mosque located in the Sacred Area to secure blessings. First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasin ghe Rajapaksa, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Minister Jagath Pushpakumara, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa and Uva Chief Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa also joined in this occasion.
The President on his return journey from Kataragama this morning met the residents in Ranna and extended his greetings for the New Year.
In the meantime, the President during his journey to Kataragama paid obeisance at the historic Tissamaharma Raja Maha Vihare. He also called on the Chief Incumbent of the Vihare, the Ven. Dr. Devalegama Dhammasena Thera and inquired into his well being.
