Dark memories on 15th March

Add comments

Tiger terrorism which plagued the country for three decades is no more. The entire nation now leads peaceful lives.

The country had bitter experiences during the dark era. Some incidents which took place on 15th March during this fear psychosis period are being recollected in this feature.

On 15th March 1987, the LTTE terrorists exploded a landmine in the Kankesanthurai town, killing two war heroes. The terrorists who stormed into the Kivulkade village bumped off seven innocent Sinhala civilians. The killing took place on a day like today in the year 1988. Olukuddu area was the next target of the terrorists on 15th March 1993, the terrorists unleashed a powerful attack targeting the war heroes. As a result the country lost the valuable services of three war heroes.

The tiger terrorists mooted a mortar and a small weapons attack at the war heroes on a day like today in the year 1996 in the Pallimunai Lagoon. 14 gallant soldiers made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country in this incident. On 15th March 2008, a similar mortar attack was unleashed on the war heroes in the Kokkuthuduwai area. The terrorists took away the lives of six war heroes in this assault.

These merciless LTTE terrorists frequently mooted attacks targeting innocent Tamil civilians. In a similar attack in the Puthukudiyiruppu area launched on 15th March 2009, the terrorists killed four civilians. On the same day the tiger terrorists unleashed massive attacks at two locations in the Puthukudiyiruppu area. 17 heroic soldiers sacrificed their lives on behalf of the country in these attacks.

Accordingly the number of lives lost on 15th March throughout the dark era during the conflict period was 69. It included 14 innocent civilians. The other 55 were war heroes. The members of the Security Forces who advanced in the humanitarian operations succeeded in enthroning sustainable peace in the country due to the bold and prudent decisions taken by President Rajapaksa and the intelligent guidance given by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. They achieved freedom for the country by making supreme sacrifices.

The war heroes achieved these victories heeding the Geneva Conventions, safeguarding fundamental rights and adhering to international war regulations. But the United States and Britain are attempting to prefer human rights allegation to such a group of war heroes not simply because they do not understand the nature of protecting human rights but because of their malicious deceitfulness.

But the world media during the past few months have exposed sufficient information on the flagrant human rights violations committed by them. But it is astounding to note that not a single Human Rights Watchdog had come forward to talk about these fundamental rights breaches. The patriotic fraternity of the country is not prepared to betray the freedom gained after making many dedications. They will also not hesitate to come forward to safeguard the motherland in the face of these forces. The nation had proved this to the world on many occasions.
