A price control on rice has been imposed with effect from midnight today. Raids will be carried out from tomorrow to nab traders selling this commodity at high prices.
Minister Johnston Fernando said that a decision has been taken to impose a control price for rice as traders were selling this commodity at increased prices during this festive season and putting the consumers into difficulty.
Accordingly, a kilogram of de-stoned Samba, other than Keeri Samba and Sooduru Samba, will have to be sold at not more than Rs.77. The maximum price of a kilogram of white Nadu at Rs.68; a kilogram of red Nadu at Rs.66 a kilogram of Sudu Kekulu at Rs.66 and a kilogram of Rathu Kekulu at Rs.60. The President in the last budget increased the guaranteed price of a kilo of paddy with the intention of safeguarding the farmer community. But the consumers are hindered as private traders are earning excessive profits. As such the Trade Minister said that this price control has been imposed with the intention of protecting both the consumer as well as the farmer.
